GovHack is Australia’s largest hackathon, bringing together people with a broad and diverse range of skills to create amazing projects during the 46 hour competition using open government data.

This year there were 27 GovHack events across Australia, and the GovHack Canberra event was one of the largest. For some statistics, there were over 250 people at the launch on the Friday night and 170 participants on-site on average at any one time. Additionally, during the 46 hour competition 52 teams created projects and consumed:

  • 140 pizzas on the Friday night
  • 200 chocolate éclaires
  • 170 lunches on chicken tenders and wedges on the Saturday
  • 800 cans of soft drinks
  • 45 kg of Indian food on Saturday night
  • 150 cups of instant noodles
  • 180 lunches on fish and chips on the Sunday
  • Over 600 cups of coffee — going through 9kg of coffee and 90 litres of milk
  • 150 servings of gelato
  • 95 litres of juice

…and we haven’t even mentioned the snacks available during the Saturday and Sunday of the competition!

Congratulations to Al and Denise Paton for winning the Canberra Spirit of GovHack award, recognising their enormous efforts over the past two years volunteering and organising the logistics of GovHack Canberra.

Additionally, congratulations to team Leftovers for winning the GovHack Canberra iBeacon Scav Hunt and $500 of Uber credit, also redeemable for UberEATS which recently launched in Canberra!

Judging of projects is currently taking place, and we look forward to hosting everyone back at the Snow Centre on the evening of Wednesday 20 September for the GovHack ACT awards.

We would also like to thank the sponsors of GovHack Canberra 2017 for making the event possible:

…and all the volunteers who generously offered their time to help run the event: Cynthia Anderson, Sandeep Balakrishnan, Karen Dahl, Anaisel Lopez De Garcia, Anca Ghita, Jade Koekoe, Eleanor Lau, Al Paton, Denise Paton, Patrick Paton, Nick Rollings, Greg Tankard, Craig Thomler, Christian West, and Heidi Winter.

Here’s a selection of some photos from the event. Thank you to our official photographer William Hall for these amazing images.

See you at GovHack 2018!
